For decades from the time of Jawaharlal Nehru american presidents have avoided visiting India as they felt that India was a nation in the Soviet orbit. In between for a long period from 1960 to nearly 1998, only one president ( Jimmy Carter) visited India. Reagan, Kennedy, Johnson, Bush Sr. and Truman never considered it fit to make a visit to India. Obama has changed all that and this will be his second visit to India. It is a significant visit as he will also be the chief guest at the Republic day Military parade. Obama will sit in a bullet proof capsule and witness the parade.
