Angelina Jolie, 41 and Brad Pitt, 52 have decided to call it quits citing irreconcilable difference. The couple recently celebrated their second wedding anniversary and have spent a dozen years together. With three adopted and three biological children, their split-up has caused shock around the world.
What was once considered one of the great love stories of the 21st century has come down to two cold and brief statements, Jolie’s statement was made by her lawyer, Robert Offer and said that her decision to file for divorce was made for “the health of the family”.
Pitt made a statement to People Magazine in which he said “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now it the well-being of our kids,” I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time. “
The couple has been together for twelve years. They met and fell in love on the set of the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2005, which resulted in the breakup of Pitts 5 year marriage to Friends actress Jennifer Aniston. The relationship between Jolie and Pitt has provided fodder for the paparazzi and the entertainment press from the moment it was discovered that they were an item. Their first biological daughter, Shiloh, was born in 2006 in Namibia and the twins, Knox and Vivienne, were born two years later in Nice, France. They were married in a private ceremony at their estate in France in August 2014.
Angelina Jolie is the daughter of actor Jon Voigt and actress Marcheline Bertrand. She was previously married to Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton. She adopted three children from foreign countries, Maddox from Cambodia, Zahara from Ethiopia and Pax from Vietnam. Pitt has adopted the children as well and they carry the surname Jolie-Pitt.
If their life up to this point is any indication, the divorce is going to cause a media frenzy. In the past, when they wanted to avoid the paparazzi as much as possible, they have resorted to going overseas and choosing exotic locations. It remains to be seen how they will handle this one separately.
Ms. Jolie has asked for physical custody of their six children with visitation being allowed by Pitt. She has not asked for spousal support but has requested to keep “miscellaneous jewelry and other personal effects” as well as any earnings from after the date of their separation and other separate assets to be determined later.
Brangelina is no more and to some in Hollywood and elsewhere, it seems like the end of an era.
