Breed Facts of a Redbone Coonhound

One of the breed facts of a Redbone Coonhound is a medium sized breed of dog that was referred to as the “Saddleback” back in the early 1900s. This particular type of breed was bred to hunt raccoons. The Redbone Coonhound has been known to hunt and tree bears and cougars. This breed has also been used in waterfowel hunting as well. Their surefootedness allows them to continuously hunt on any type of terrain; swamplands to mountains. They are considered to be excellent hunters.

This medium sized type of dog breed has a life span of 11 to 15 yrs of age. Male Redbone Coonhounds stand at 22 to 27 inches high and can weigh anywhere between 50 to 70 pounds. Females stand at 21 to 26 inches high and weigh in at 45 to 70 pounds. The females are also known to produce and deliver 6 to 10 puppies at a time.

These aggressive type hunters only come in one solid color; being reddish brown. The  true breed facts of a Redbone Coonhound has eyes that are dark brown to hazel in color. Their eyes are found to be spaced far apart. The skeletal structure of their head is somewhat broad. The ears are usually set low with a square muzzle. Their nose is always black in color. The Redbone Coonhound possesses a strong back with a deep and broad chest. Their tail is considered to be of medium length and their coat is naturally smooth textured.

This type of breed is usually a people pleaser and known to be extremely slow learners. They mature much slower than other types of dog breeds. The Redbone Coonhound breed is also very energetic and requires space to release it. They can become quite troublesome is they cannot burn off their energy. Chewing on things excessively is just one sign of this particular behavior. Redbone Coonhounds can easily jump over a 5 foot fence. If this type of breed is kept indoors as an inside dog for a lengthy amount of time, it will eventually need a great deal of exercise or problems could arise. Redbone Coonhounds can make excellent pets if they are kept as an outside type of dog with plenty of space to roam. They can become overly excited when around small children if not disciplined properly.

The Redbone Coonhound breed is considered to be a light shedder. This type of hunting dog does not require much attention when it comes to grooming because they naturally possess short hair.
This particular type of breed is recognized by the CKC, AKC, UKC, NKC, APRI and the ACR organizations. The Redbone Coonhound breed can be found in many types of dog shows as well.
