Having a fever can be quite worrisome for you, or a loved one. Usually, the cause of a fever is a viral illness which only needs to be treated by a few simple measures, until the illness has run its course. Keeping a fever under control can help reduce the discomfort until the illness has passed.
So How Do I Get Relief from a Fever?
Fan Therapy – though this may seem rather simplistic, it is one of the first-line recommendations among many health care practitioners and institutions. Simply keeping a fan oscillating at a low speed on the patient can help dissipate some of the discomfort.
Tepid Sponging – soaking a sponge in cool water and applying it to the hot areas can offer the patient some measure of relief.
In addition to the previously mentioned measures, it is advisable to take 2 tablets (1g) of acetaminophen / paracetamol, every 6 hours, or less often if it is needed less often. These tablets are often sold under the brand name Tylenol or Panadol, although there are cheaper generics.
Seek help! While it is true that most fevers are self-limiting and run their course after a few days, if the above measure do not help, the patient’s condition worsens, or you are unsure about anything or have any additional concerns, it is advised to contact a medical practitioner or go to the Emergency Department immediately.
