One of the best things about summer is the food! Parties, barbecues, picnics, all kinds of occasions to have fun with your friends and eat great food! One of my favorite things to make for summer parties is pasta salad. Since food at summer parties sits out on the table, sometimes hours at a time, making any type of salad with mayonnaise is not a good idea because it spoils quickly. Because of this, I started making my pasta salad with Italian salad dressing. Not only is it flavorful and delicious, it is will not spoil, even when it is out for hours at a time. It also goes great with just about anything you want to serve: hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs, chicken, brauts, even steaks!
Buying ready made Italian dressing in the store, can get pretty pricey, since you have to use the whole bottle for a large bowl of pasta. This being the case, I have learned to make my own. It really is easy to do, and the best part is that the ingredients I use is stuff I have in the kitchen all the time anyway! No special shopping required.
1 cup of the vinegar, I use apple cider vinegar, but you can use whichever one you like 1 1/3 cup of olive oil 2 tablespoons of water 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1/2 tablespoon onion powder 1/2 tablespoon honey or sugar 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 tablespoon dried parsley 1 tablespoon salt
Just mix it all the ingredients and shake well!
Makes a Great Jar Gift Too!
This recipe also makes a great jar gift, just take the dry ingredients and put them in a jar with a little tag that has a list of the wet ingredients. It is a very thoughtful gift to give to anyone that is pressed for time, or wants to save money. The best part is, you can adjust the ingredients to the way you prefer them. More sugar or more garlic powder. Some people even add red pepper flakes to spice it up! One of my favorite things I add sometimes is a tablespoon of djon mustard, it changes the flavor subtly and it really is delicious! Don’t be afraid to try new ingredients!
