Does your typical diet store too much salt in your body? When you often eat foods that are salty, you get extra sodium in to your system. This makes your kidneys work harder by pumping out more water into your blood. When your kidneys are overworked, you may suffer from high blood pressure. Over time, this will put additional pressure on your heart and blood vessels resulting in various illnesses.

A good balance of potassium and sodium in your body is key to lowering your blood pressure. If your current diet has about 1:2 ratio of potassium to sodium, you may want to aim for a 5:1 ratio. This will put in much more potassium than sodium and help your body maintain a healthy blood pressure.

You can get potassium from natural sources like fruits and vegetables. Bananas and potatoes are especially high in potassium and can be easily incorporated to your daily menu. Just remember to have them with little or without salt so you can fully benefit from their nutritional value.
