My Mother-in-Law and I Have Never Met

My mother-in-law and I have never met. I realized today how often in-laws are unfairly stereotyped and labeled. All that I wanted was a saying or a quote to express loving feelings for her on Facebook. All that I found were terrible messages on how they should mind their own business and how they’re evil manipulative witches. My mother-in-law and I never met because Heaven is her home. She passed away years before I came along. I wish that I could have met her, but it isn’t possible now.

Stereotypical Evil In-Laws

I can’t send her a text message, or go out to lunch. I can’t ask her for advice. Imagine that thought! Many women would never want advice from their husband’s mother. Some are considered clueless and wicked. How dare they make a comment on anything more than the weather? Even the simplest and most innocent topics are misinterpreted. They could have been a friend, but the stereotypical evil in-law label was applied from the beginning.

The Defensive Daughter-in-Law

It takes maturity to realize that maybe a mother-in-law’s knowledge is worth considering. It takes maturity to realize that everything said isn’t peppered with a passive-aggressive meaning. In-laws have the connotation of being evil and overbearing. Yes, some are truly pushy and mean, but others have been unfairly stereotyped. Words and phrases are dissected and examined. The defensive daughter-in-law has her brain set on negative. If something can be interpreted in either an adverse or encouraging way, her words are translated as rude and worthless. For the mother-in-law that means no harm, it’s really very sad.

It’s Sad That My Mother-in-Law and I Have Never Met

I wish that I could call or text my mother-in-law, but she’s too far away to reach. I wish that I could ask for her recipes and spend the day baking, but we can’t do those things. From all that I’ve heard, I would have loved her dearly. She was a wonderful woman with a heart of gold. I miss her even though we’ve never spoken. My mother-in-law and I have never met, but we will meet in Heaven someday.
