For many years, it was a tradition for scores of people to buy a delicious, locally made fruitcake from the monks at the Trappist monastery Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville, Va. Christmas 2014 saw the end of that tradition. Early in 2014 the production of the decadent fruit and nut filled cakes ceases and things will never be quite the same in this quiet area of Virginia.
No reason has been given for the closure but in 2011 the youngest monk was 55 years old and there were only 13 monks at the abbey. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to draw the conclusion that there just were not enough hands to sustain the operation. It is a sad day for those who loved this very special cake. A Christmas tradition is no more.
