Portrait of Unconditional Love
March 24, 2016

Black and blue paint covering the room
He lays there beside her in bed
Holding on to her cold hand
Whispering “rest in peace my love”
Tears of pain trickling from within
His face is a canvas of emotion
As he lulls her to sleep
With the voice of an angel
Every mournful note of his arias
Piercing the heart
A portrait of unconditional love
A masterpiece for the ages

This poem was inspired by the passing of my paternal grandmother, a number of years ago. She was one of the fortunate people who passed away in the middle of the night while sleeping in her own bed with her husband, my paternal grandfather, lying beside her.

My grandfather, who unfortunately is also no longer here, loved my grandmother dearly, as she did him. They did everything together and were there for each other through everything. They were together till her dying day.

My grandfather loved to sing and my grandmother loved to hear him sing and that also inspired part of the poem.

This poem was written for a writing challenge using the following list of words: canvas, paint, portrait, masterpiece, face, voice, arias, notes, angel.
