The Diary
April 29, 2016

The diary is a book of memories but also my confidante
I turn to it when I need to share stories of the past
When the emotions I keep inside me need to be released
When I need to bare my soul about love and heartbreak
When I need to share my hopes and dreams for the future
When I want to fantasize about my future wedding
And about saying I Do to the one I love
While the diary is meant to hold secrets
The secrets are not really hidden
Because through poetry
I get to share them with the world

I have always wanted to have a leather diary (one with a lock and key) when I was little but I didn’t get to do it until I got older. I loved writing in it, sharing anything that was on my mind, whether good or bad. I wrote about my hopes and dreams for the future, about love and heartbreak, about my experiences and emotions, about the past, about things happening in my life at that moment etc… When my diary got full I got another one. I haven’t written in it in a long time and think I should get back into it. It helps to cope; plus it allows me to keep the things I went through and the happenings in my life on paper that I may otherwise end up forgetting about. Now that I am writing poetry I get to share the things that made it into my diary with the world and do it through poetic verse.

This poem was written for a writing challenge using the following word list: diary, secrets, stories, heartbreak, wedding, hopes, dreams, love, past, I Do.
