Is Presidents Choice Nutrition First a Good Cat Food? Review and Analysis

Nutrition First Cat Food, by President’s Choice, is the cat food which I feed to my five cats, although I usually also put some cheaper cat food outside for them too (knowing that the low quality food is also eaten by birds and skunks).  I am familiar with pet foods and ingredients because I have worked at an animal shelter for many years, learned about the different ingredients and owned my own pet supply store.

President’s Choice Nutrition First Chicken and Brown Rice Cat food (not to be mistaken for their Hairball formula) is an exception to the rule that good cat food is never found in grocery stores. Be aware that President’s Choice does make other, lower quality, cat foods, but I am specifically talking about only this formula as a dry, kibble, cat food.

Ingredients in President’s Choice Nutrition First Cat Food

Chicken meal, chicken, brown rice, dehulled barley, oatmeal, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols – source of vitamin e), potatoes, natural chicken flavor, whole dried egg, herring meal, salmon oil (source of dha), tomatoes, brewers yeast, phosphoric acid, whole sweet potatoes, whole carrots, whole blueberries, whole cranberries, whole apples, dl-methionine, potassium chloride, calcium sulphate, salt, choline chloride, taurine, vitamins & chelated minerals (vitamin e, vitamin c, niacin, inositol, vitamin a, thiamine mononitrate, d-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, vitamin k, beta carotene, vitamin d3, folic acid, biotin, vitamin b12, zinc proteinate, ferrous sulphate, zinc oxide, iron proteinate, copper sulphate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), probiotics (lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus casei, enterococcus faecium, bifidobacterium thermophilum), chicory root, yucca schidigera, dried rosemary.

The first ingredients are actual meat, which is good to see.  You will note that this cat food is that it does not contain wheat, soy, or by-products, all of which are known to cause health problems in cats, and are typically cheap filler with no value to a cat food.  The only flaw is that the meat itself is not listed as being “human grade” however this is not a huge concern given everything else.

Rice is a filler which has little value to cats, but brown rice is considerably better than other rice, and lots better than brewer’s rice which is a cheap filler.

The cranberries help with the urinary tract system, which is a bonus.

Brewer’s yeast is said to help offer some flea protection.

The yucca helps with litter box odor and arthritis too.

All in all the food is very good for its price.  Certainly there are better quality cat foods available however I would say there are more that are worse.

Some of the benefits of President’s Choice Nutrition First Dry Cat Food, over a lower priced, brand with poor ingredients (such as Purina Cat Chow), is that the cat will eat less and therefore also produce less stool.  They should also have fewer diet related problems later in life.

The kibble pieces are small and round, generally a good size for most cats.  My cats all eat it and enjoy the taste.  I have not encountered a cat that would not eat this food, however cats that are use to eating low quality cat foods may have a difficult time switching to good food as they are become somewhat addicted to eating the junkier foods.

President’s Choice Nutrition First Cat Food is only available at stores where President’s Choice products are sold.  As such is is available mostly in Canada, and only in a few places elsewhere.
