Lots of people day dream about working from home doing their thing, whether it is freelance writing or forum posting or designing graphics. And it certainly can be done. But if you’re going to do it, do it right!
Here are a few tips (which I currently need to work on):
1. Have a work space. It doesn’t have to be your own office but it does have to be a functional space where you can have quiet time at some point in the day; it does have to have all of your work essentials near by; it does have to be neat and orderly; it does have to have good light. Without those things you’ll soon find yourself getting distracted, annoyed, and wanting to get away from it!
2. Create work hours. You don’t have to do the whole 9-5 thing. You do have to develop some sort of routine though. If you work best at 3 am and can get work done and sleep later in the day, do that. But not everyone can. Some people need that 9-5 time to be functional.
3. Consistently look for work. If you only look for work when you need it you will soon find that there are going to be some pretty broke days. Make sure you always have something to do.
#2 is the one that is getting me the most. Always has. I’m not a person that likes a schedule naturally and I really have to work on that!
