California Chrome has become the latest horse to win the hearts of Americans. This beautiful, copper-colored animal is a “nobody” as far as racing genes are concerned. He was sired by a $2,500 stallion and born to a $8,000 mare … a drop in the bucket as far as race horses are concerned.
In addition, California Chrome’s trainer is 77 years old, the oldest trainer to work with a horse that has won the Kentucky Derby. Many people were skeptical about his ability to pull it off.

The California owners are thrilled with the success they earned from their relatively small investment. The horse is owned by Dumb Ass Partners, a partnership created by Steve Coburn and Perry Martin.
In the past 13 years, seven other horses have won the first two races in the legendary Triple Crown, but all fell short when it came to winning the Belmont. Race lovers are on the edge of their seats waiting for the 2014 Belmont to be run in three weeks. Everyone wants to see how California Chrome does in this 1.5 mile race … the longest of the three events.
Not only has California Chrome won his first two races, but he won them both by at least a length, making it even more likely that he will be a serious contender in the Belmont.
